Oman advances to Gulf Cup semi‑final after draw of lots

A draw of lots at a Jeddah hotel decided the fourth semi‑finalist, sending Oman through despite equal points with Iraq.

Oman will face the Group B winner in the Gulf Cup 27 semi‑finals after a draw of lots resolved a tie with Iraq, Gulf News reported on 29 September.

Both teams finished Group A on four points with identical goal differences, having drawn 1‑1 in their opening match and each winning one game. With no further criteria to separate them, officials conducted a draw at the InterContinental Hotel in Jeddah around midnight local time, selecting Oman as the lucky side.

Iraq, which had earlier beaten Kuwait 3‑2, was initially told it had qualified before officials corrected the information. Saudi Arabia, the Group A winners, will meet the Group B winner – either the United Arab Emirates or Qatar – in the semi‑final on 3 October.
