New Brunswick PCs to Choose New Leader in Fredericton
Don Monahan and Daniel Allain vie for the PC leadership as the party seeks unity after Blaine Higgs' resignation.

New Brunswick's Progressive Conservative Party is set to elect a new leader this afternoon in Fredericton, according to a Canadian Press report published by the Winnipeg Free Press.
What happened
The party, which has been led on an interim basis by Glen Savoie since former premier Blaine Higgs stepped down after the 2024 defeat, will hold its leadership vote today. Two candidates are in the race: current opposition finance critic Don Monahan and former legislator Daniel Allain.
What the reports add
Political science professor Mario Levesque, who authored a book on New Brunswick politics this year, says the contest pits Monahan, aligned with Higgs and the party’s socially conservative wing, against Allain, described as a moderate Tory in the mould of past premiers David Alward and Bernard Lord. Levesque expects a close race and notes the challenge for moderates to unite the party.
What was said
Interim leader Glen Savoie dismissed concerns about internal divisions, stating the opposition will focus on defeating Premier Susan Holt’s Liberals.
How it came about
The leadership race follows the party’s loss in the 2024 provincial election, which prompted Higgs' resignation and left the PCs without a permanent leader.
