Mozilla Foundation launches wheat‑paste campaign targeting tech billionaires

The nonprofit body behind Firefox has taken to city intersections to question the achievements of tech giants and highlight grassroots creators.

Mozilla Foundation has installed wheat‑paste posters across New York City intersections during Climate Week NYC, calling out Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos for what it sees as vanity projects. The campaign, which ran on the city’s sidewalks, contrasts the CEOs’ high‑profile ventures with the work of Mozilla Fellows such as Rose Njeri Tunguru, who is building infrastructure to verify Kenyan election results, and Rudy Fraser, creator of the decentralised social network framework Blacksky.

The posters describe Musk’s Twitter takeover as “destruction”, Bezos’s space tourism as a “rocket that lets celebrities cosplay as astronauts”, and Zuckerberg’s “pervert glasses” as a “public square” moderated by a “wannabe king”. The Foundation says these projects lack imagination and benefit only a few, whereas the Fellows’ tools are designed to empower local communities and expose issues such as police violence in Brazil.

Mozilla’s message is that the future of the internet need not be shaped by a handful of billionaires. The nonprofit, which owns the Firefox browser, was founded in 2003 to keep the web open and accessible as a global public resource. The campaign also promotes its fellowship programme, encouraging sign‑ups to support projects that serve real people.
