Morocco launches probe after 15 patients lose vision following eye injections

The Ministry of Health has formed a fact‑finding committee as infection control specialists examine possible contamination.

Morocco's Ministry of Health and Social Protection has opened an urgent investigation after 15 of 18 patients suffered severe vision loss following therapeutic eye injections at Mohammed VI University Hospital in Tangier, Gulf News reported.

The problem first emerged on Oct 8 when two patients developed acute eye inflammation. Hospital staff later identified similar complications in 15 patients, most of whom were elderly diabetics with pre‑existing retinal damage. Visual acuity in some cases fell to about 2/10, with a few reporting total blindness.

Infection‑control experts and the National Blood Agency have visited the hospital, collecting blood samples for laboratory testing. Officials rejected claims that expired medication was used, noting the injections remain valid until Sep 30 2028, and said the cause of the infections is still unknown.
