On Oct. 10, the animated series “Migali” made its world premiere at MIPJunior, the Cannes‑based market for children’s television, in front of international buyers, Variety reported.
What happened
“Migali” is a 52‑episode series, each episode 11 minutes long, that follows six‑year‑old Migali, a spider princess who attends the Royal Academy to hone her web‑weaving abilities. The show was produced by Adelaïde Terme’s Easy Peasy Entertainment, a licensing arm of French publisher Auzou, in co‑production with Bardaf! Productions, RTBF, Ketnet, RTS and TF1. The series is based on the comic book by Alexandre Arlène and Fabien Ockö Lambert.
What the reports add
Variety notes that the series targets children aged five to eight and emphasizes a protagonist who faces everyday challenges similar to its audience. The article also highlights that the comic’s nine volumes have sold more than 150,000 copies in France, a success that helped secure the adaptation.
What was said
Director Cédric Frémeaux told Variety, “I’ve always loved animated series… I was captivated by these worlds… Growing up, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to work in that industry someday.” He added, “She presented me Auzou’s line‑up, and I immediately connected with ‘Migali.’ What struck me with this character is how radiant and fun she was, as a heroine.” Frémeaux also described Migali as “Spiderman’s young cousin living in a world of unicorns, dragons and potions.”
How it came about
Frémeaux, a former storyboard artist, began his career interning at French multimedia company Ankama before studying animation at LISAA in Paris. “Migali” is his second series as director; the first was “50/50 Heroes.” The collaboration with Terme began after she presented Auzou’s catalogue, selecting Migali for the project. The series was completed with close involvement from the comic’s creators and the production partners.
