Michael Goessling, a 58‑year‑old St. Louis resident who was adopted as an infant, learned that his biological father is Grammy‑winning musician Michael McDonald, the former Doobie Brothers frontman, after a half‑brother’s DNA test linked them.
Goessling, who was raised by Paul and Kay Goessling, said he always knew he was adopted. A half‑brother who took a 23andMe test received an email identifying Goessling as a half‑sibling, prompting the search. Within 36 hours the notification arrived, and Goessling began contacting his birth family.
On his 58th birthday he met his birth mother in person and later spoke with McDonald by phone. When Goessling asked about his career, McDonald confirmed he was a touring musician and identified himself. The pair later met, with Goessling describing a "big old bear hug" from his father.
McDonald reflected that he had long carried guilt about not being able to support his son financially, but expressed relief that Goessling had a good life. He also noted discovering he is now a grandfather, expressing surprise and pride in his daughter‑in‑law and grandchildren.
