First Lady Melania Trump announced a localized cease‑fire between Russia and Ukraine that will begin on October 29, aimed at protecting the predominantly elderly residents of Oleshky, a front‑line city in southern Ukraine, Daily Mail reported.
In a statement, Trump said the situation in Oleshky is dire and that the pause in hostilities will allow safe passage for civilians needing medical care, food, water and evacuation to either Russia or Ukraine.
The city was seized by Russian forces on the first day of the invasion in February 2022 and has suffered shortages of electricity, heat and running water. Hundreds died when the Kakhovka Dam collapsed after an explosion in June 2023, an incident the Associated Press linked to the Russian military.
Trump, who previously wrote to President Vladimir Putin in August and had the letter delivered by former President Donald Trump during a summit in Anchorage, Alaska, has also worked to reunite Ukrainian children separated from their families.
