Mayor Zohran Mamdani to skip Manhattan Columbus Day parade

The mayor's absence follows his long‑standing criticism of Christopher Columbus and recent controversies with the Italian‑American community.

By Felo News Desk · Published

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will not attend Manhattan’s Columbus Day parade on Monday, the New York Post reported. The decision aligns with Mamdani’s history of denouncing Columbus as a colonizer, including a June 2020 social‑media post where he called for the removal of a Columbus statue in Queens.

Italian‑American leaders, such as Angelo Vivolo of the Columbus Heritage Coalition, condemned the mayor’s no‑show as disrespectful to the community’s heritage. Vivolo said the parade celebrates Italian culture and Mamdani’s absence confirms his disdain for Columbus.

Mamdani previously issued a three‑minute video for Italian Heritage Month, praising Italian immigrants and honoring Rep. Vito Marcantonio. He has also faced backlash for boycotting an Israel Day parade earlier this year.
