Manitoba’s legislature resumed on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, with the Opposition Progressive Conservatives scrambling to choose an interim leader after Obby Khan resigned on Monday, the Canadian Press reported.
Khan said internal party feuding and attempts to undermine his leadership forced his departure, and he will sit as an independent. His resignation leaves the Tories with 19 seats, compared with Premier Wab Kinew’s NDP holding 34, the Liberals one, and three independents including Khan.
Christopher Adams, an adjunct professor of political science at the University of Manitoba, said he was not surprised by the move and described it as a “sad day for the PC party.” He linked the resignation to declining PC popularity in Winnipeg and suggested the party consider a leader who could appeal to urban voters, naming city councillor Janice Lukes and federal MP James Bezan as possible options.
