In downtown Manhattan on Monday night, allies of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani hosted a fundraiser for Texas Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico and Ohio Democratic Senate hopeful Sherrod Brown. The event, billed as the Ohio Texas Victory Fund’s “special reception,” began at 7 p.m. and offered tickets starting at $500 for regular attendance, with “champion” donors able to pay up to $27,000.
Hollywood actor Robert De Niro was expected to introduce the candidates, whose campaigns could influence the balance of power in the U.S. Senate next year. The host committee included jeweler Alexis Bittar, a longtime Mamdani fundraiser, and several LGBT activists, including Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson and GLAAD board member Shameek Bose. Other committee members were Shaifali Puri, the wife of comedian Aasif Mandvi, filmmaker Shruti Rya Ganguly, author Adriana Trigiani, and lawyer Victor Kovner.
Talarico faces Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton in Texas, while Brown’s opponent is Republican Senator John Husted in Ohio. The fundraiser is part of a broader strategy to raise money from affluent New York donors for Senate races outside the city.
