Dubai – Dr Sriram Nene, the cardiovascular surgeon married to Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, told Gulf News that he did not recognise Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan when they attended the couple’s wedding reception in 1999.
The admission came while filmmaker Farah Khan and her cook Dilip filmed a cooking vlog at Madhuri and Dr Nene’s Mumbai home. Nene said he was unfamiliar with most of the celebrities present, noting Amitabh Bachchan as the sole star he recognised because he had seen the classic film Amar Akbar Anthony.
"I didn’t know anyone. It was like Prom King, you just waved at everyone and later look at the wedding album because you don’t know anyone. The only person I knew was Amitabh Bachchan because I had seen Amar Akbar Anthony," Nene said to Farah Khan, as reported by Gulf News.
When asked specifically about Shah Rukh and Salman, Nene confirmed he had not recognised them, though he added the two were "extremely sweet" to him at the reception.
Nene explained his lack of familiarity with Bollywood stems from his upbringing in the United States. He said he grew up in Los Angeles, watched Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Star Wars, and did not speak Hindi or watch Hindi films before meeting Madhuri.
He recalled meeting Madhuri, dating for three months, and proposing after that short courtship. The couple married on 17 October 1999, after which Madhuri moved to the US and paused her acting career. They have two sons, Arin and Ryan, and Madhuri later returned to Indian cinema.
