George Lucas and Mellody Hobson opened the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles on Tuesday, according to Rolling Stone. The 300,000‑square‑foot, 13‑acre campus in Exposition Park houses about 1,300 displayed artifacts from a permanent collection of more than 40,000 works.

Lucas, who has invested over $1 billion in the project, said the museum celebrates visual storytelling, noting that pictures have been humanity’s primary narrative tool for millennia. He described himself as a “contrarian” and said the museum aims to bring people together through shared stories.

The museum’s interior unfolds like a labyrinth, with displays ranging from a life‑sized Cowardly Lion from *Wizard of Oz* to a 1940 self‑portrait by Frida Kahlo and a 1931 photograph of the artist. Star Wars items make up a small portion of the exhibition, while the majority focus on universal myths.
