AP photographer Jae C. Hong captures waves battering Long Beach homes

Hong used a low‑level drone to show the height of waves that have pounded Long Beach homes for days after Tropical Storm Rachel.

Associated Press staff photojournalist Jae C. Hong said he photographed waves crashing into ocean‑front homes in Long Beach, California, after several days of pounding following the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel.

Hong followed news reports of the damage and went to the site on Monday, which he expected to be one of the last days of the strongest surf. He used a drone to shoot from near ground level, aiming to convey the wave height while staying clear of the spray that could damage the equipment.

He noted that the waves were not the biggest on record, but the repeated impact had stripped sand and threatened foundations, leaving the houses vulnerable.
