Los Angeles County warns of high bacteria at multiple beaches amid heat wave

Health officials advise against swimming at six Los Angeles County beaches after tests show bacteria exceeding state standards.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced on Monday that elevated bacteria levels have triggered water safety warnings for several popular beaches, including Santa Monica, Paradise Cove, Redondo, Venice, Topanga County and Manhattan Beach.

The advisories, which cover anywhere from 100 yards to entire swimming zones, come as a prolonged heat wave pushes temperatures higher across Southern California. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories lasting into mid‑October, citing an El Niño‑driven Kelvin wave and above‑normal sea‑surface temperatures as contributing factors.

While most beaches remain open, Malibu Lagoon at Surfrider Beach and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro were removed from the list after recent samples fell within state standards. Heal the Bay rated Redondo Beach and the Manhattan Beach Pier area with an “F” on its Beach Report Card, while Malibu Lagoon received a “C.”
