European producers say ‘La Bola Negra’ proves risky films can succeed
Producers at the MIA Market panel said the Netflix‑backed queer epic demonstrates that bold storytelling can win both audiences and Oscar buzz.

Italian and Spanish film and TV producers told the MIA Market on Monday that the Netflix‑acquired Spanish‑language epic La Bola Negra shows taking creative risks can yield box‑office returns and Oscar‑season momentum.
What happened
During a panel titled “Can Excellence Survive the Mainstream,” former MovieStar executive and producer Corral argued that the film, directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo and starring Glenn Close and Penélope Cruz, defied expectations of film commissioners who predicted failure. The movie opened in U.S. theatres on Oct. 16 and will move to streaming on Dec. 2.
What the reports add
Corral said the film’s success at Cannes and its Oscar‑contender status illustrate that “if you don’t take risks, you will repeat and repeat the same.” Belén Atienza of Suspense Entertainment added that streamers are beginning to realise they can make money at the box office by backing bold projects, especially in Spain. Spanish producer Fernando Bovaira highlighted tax breaks and subsidies that give producers stability, urging platforms to keep supporting original voices.
What was said
Corral told the market, “La Bola Negra is a film about queer love, about civil war… it’s one of the best films at Cannes and it’s one of the contenders for an Oscar.” Atienza said, “Suddenly the big players realize they can make a lot of money at the box office. But they need to take that risk.” Bovaira added, “I’m optimistic that the platforms will embrace more creative risks… If you make a film for a platform, you enter into a closed circuit, and the life of the film or series will only be in that circuit.”
How it came about
Corral, who recently signed a deal with HBO Max for his Good Day Productions banner, said producers must support the original vision of filmmakers and provide resources for both domestic and international markets. The discussion builds on earlier Felo coverage of the film’s TIFF People’s Choice win (Felo article) and its growing awards‑season profile.
