The Wall Street Journal reported that US ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle told Greek energy minister Stavros Papastavrou the United States could collapse "any country we want" during a dinner in Athens in March.
Guilfoyle allegedly referenced the recent collapse of Romania’s pro‑EU government, saying, "We can do that to any country we want. We can do that here." Papastavrou replied that the US could not replace Greece’s elected government.
Guilfoyle’s lawyer denied the characterisation of the exchange, and Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said no threat was ever made. Party secretary Konstantinos Kyranakis, who attended the event, also said there was no threat to Greece.
