Kerala forms district‑level committees to curb dengue and chikungunya
The state will set up coordination and ward‑level groups and launch a “Dry Day” campaign to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

Kerala’s health minister K Muraleedharan announced on Monday that the state will create coordination committees headed by district collectors to strengthen prevention of communicable diseases such as dengue and chikungunya, according to a PTI‑reported statement.
What happened
The decision was taken during a communicable disease review meeting in Thiruvananthapuram. The committees will identify dengue hotspots, intensify mosquito‑control measures and launch “Dry Day” activities on Fridays at schools, Saturdays at workplaces and Sundays at homes to destroy potential breeding sites.
What the reports add
News18’s feed notes that ward‑level committees will include councillors or panchayat members, residents’‑association representatives and health workers. It also reports that new fever clinics will be opened where needed and that district medical officers and programme managers will meet regularly to review grassroots activities.
What was said
“Dry Day” activities will be observed on Fridays at educational institutions, Saturdays at workplaces and Sundays at homes by destroying potential mosquito‑breeding sources, the minister said.
The statement was attributed to K Muraleedharan and relayed by PTI.
How it came about
The move follows concerns over intermittent rains that could create stagnant water and foster mosquito breeding, prompting the health department to act in line with the epidemic calendar.
