Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi on Monday, Sep 29, 2026, and asked the centre to speed up clearances and funding for key water projects, notably the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir.

Shivakumar said the centre has grasped Karnataka’s position that water from the Mekedatu reservoir should be used solely for drinking purposes, not irrigation. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to send a delegation to inspect the proposed site and offered full cooperation.

The CM highlighted that Karnataka has submitted a fresh detailed project report for the Rs 16,745‑crore Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir and Drinking Water Project, and requested the Central Water Commission prioritize its appraisal and the compliance report filed on Aug 13.
