Karnataka chief minister announces Rs 80 million rewards for Asian Games athletes

Dubai – Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Tuesday a total of Rs 8 crore (Dh 3.03 million) in cash awards for the state’s athletes who competed at the Asian Games 2026. The ceremony at Vidhana Soudha recognised all 20 Karnataka participants, each receiving Rs 5 lakh (Dh 18,967) regardless of medal outcome.
Medal winners will see their rewards lifted: gold medallists now get Rs 1 crore (Dh 379,345) up from Rs 35 lakh, silver medallists Rs 75 lakh (Dh 284,509) up from Rs 25 lakh, and bronze medallists Rs 50 lakh (Dh 189,673) up from Rs 15 lakh. The government also introduced direct recruitment to Group‑B posts for Asian and Commonwealth Games medallists, overseen by a selection committee headed by the chief secretary.
As part of the ‘Guri Olympics’ scheme for 2026‑27, Poovamma, Sneha S.S., Shreyanka R. Patil and Shilpa K.S. will each receive an additional Rs 10 lakh (Dh 37,934). A 2 percent reservation in state‑government jobs for high‑achieving athletes across Group‑A to Group‑D posts was also announced.
