Karachi University students petition Sindh High Court to revive student union

The petition asks the court to direct the Sindh government to issue rules for the 2019 Student Union Act and to set up an election commission.

Students of Karachi University filed a petition in the Sindh High Court on Tuesday, seeking the revival of the university's student union. The petition, lodged at the university's School of Law, names the chief secretary, secretaries of universities and boards, the secretary of colleges, the secretary of law, the vice‑chancellor and the registrar as parties.

Petitioners argue that although the Sindh Students Union Act was approved in 2019, its rules have not yet been formulated. They request a court order directing the Sindh government to issue a notification for the law, to formulate the union's rules, and to direct the university to form an election commission and hold union elections.

The 2019 bill was drafted, referred to the standing committee on law and parliamentary affairs, and passed unanimously by the assembly in February 2022, stating that student union activities should complement academic programmes and enhance overall educational experience.
