Jye McNeil cleared for Geelong Cup after Caulfield fall
McNeil returns to the saddle at Geelong while the stewards' inquiry into the Caulfield incident is pending.
By Felo News Desk · Published
Jye McNeil has been cleared to ride at Geelong on Wednesday, three days after the fall in the Caulfield Cup that resulted in the death of four‑year‑old mare Ohope Wins, according to SMH.
What happened
During Saturday's Caulfield Cup, McNeil was unseated from Ohope Wins and taken to hospital. Fellow jockey Mark Zahra was also injured after his mount, Half Yours, fell. Both riders were discharged on Sunday night and escaped serious injury. Half Yours sustained lacerations and returned to the McEvoy stables to recover, but is unlikely to contest the Melbourne Cup.
What the report adds
The article notes that McNeil, a 2020 Melbourne Cup winner on Twilight Payment, will miss the Kyneton Cup on Tuesday but will ride five mounts at Geelong, including Valiant King in the Geelong Cup. Zahra is booked on Middle Earth for the Cox Plate and is expected to receive clearance before that race.

How it came about
The fall prompted a stewards’ inquiry, which has not yet been scheduled. The inquiry will review race footage and hear evidence from the involved jockeys and stewards. Under racing rules, any suspension resulting from the inquiry can be deferred up to nine days, allowing owners and trainers to retain their bookings.
