Fidelity says institutions are locked into tokenized on‑chain assets

Demand for tokenized real‑world assets rose 41% in the past month, with over $1.2 billion moving on‑chain, according to Cointelegraph.

Matthew Horne, head of digital‑asset strategists at Fidelity Investments, told a panel at Longitude Singapore that institutions are "no going back" to traditional markets as tokenization gains traction.

What happened

Horne said the past 18 months have seen a sharp push by “true institutions” toward on‑chain assets. He noted a 41% rise in demand for tokenized real‑world assets (RWAs) over the last 30 days, with the number of holders exceeding 493,000, according to data from RWA.xyz. The same period saw more than $1.2 billion of capital move on‑chain, lifting the total across stablecoins and tokenized assets to over $323 billion, per OnchainBenchmark.

What the reports add

UBS’s Ka Yan Chan said treasuries and equities could bring billions on‑chain, and that market‑infrastructure players such as the Fed or DTCC would need to tokenise the custody layer to unlock trillions. He referenced a December 2025 SEC “no‑action” letter to a DTCC subsidiary and a September SEC exemption for limited trading of tokenized US stocks.

What was said

"In the last 18 months, if you look at the push by true institutions to move toward an on‑chain future, it’s really no going back," Horne told Cointelegraph. Chan added, "What would really drive the billions to the trillions is when market infrastructure players like the Fed or DTCC make the first move in transforming the custody layer to a tokenized platform."
