Badenoch says inheritance tax reform must be fiscally responsible

The Conservative business secretary says any inheritance‑tax cut must be paid for, as the party launches new policy pledges at its Birmingham conference.

Kemi Badenoch told the Sunday Times that reducing inheritance tax would be "morally right" but only if the government can show how to fund it responsibly. Speaking ahead of the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, she said people should not be taxed twice on wealth passed to their children.

Badenoch added she would not announce any tax cuts without a clear financing plan, stressing the need for fiscal responsibility. The conference, which runs from 4 to 7 October, also features proposals to end the childcare "cliff edge" and tighten student‑loan access for non‑UK nationals, measures the party says could save £700 million and £900 million a year respectively.

Arriving at the venue with her husband Hamish, a banker, Badenoch responded to reporters about the party’s poll standing, claiming the Conservatives are on a "journey" to become a new party after the 2024 defeat.
