At the Shillong curtain‑raiser of India Energy Week 2027, Oil India Limited Director (Finance) Abhijit Majumder said India needs to strengthen domestic oil exploration and technological capabilities to safeguard its energy security.
Majumder described the global energy industry as "at a turning point" because of demographic growth, rising demand, geopolitical tensions and economic development, adding that disruptions to supply chains and major corridors, such as recent incidents around the Strait of Hormuz, can instantly affect prices and economies worldwide.
He pointed to India’s offshore and deep‑water resources, noting that better data, modern technology, risk‑sharing mechanisms and infrastructure could unlock them. Referring to the National Offshore Exploration Scheme, Samudra Manthan, Majumder said the initiative could expand exploration capabilities and strengthen domestic supplies.
The 2026 edition of India Energy Week attracted more than 75,000 attendees, 700 exhibiting companies and delegates from over 120 countries. The Shillong programme ran alongside a curtain‑raiser in Kolkata attended by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri.
