Bollywood actor Imran Khan was taken into custody by Mumbai Police on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at August Kranti Maidan, the site slated for a demonstration supporting the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) demand that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign, Gulf News reported.

Police said the demonstration had not received official permission, citing Bombay High Court directions that restrict protests to Azad Maidan. CJP workers claim they emailed the police seeking approval but received no response. Officers detained several demonstrators at the venue, including senior citizens, and escorted them to a police station for document checks.

In New Delhi, police said nearly 1,500 people were detained on the same day while attempting to march toward Jantar Mantar, the designated protest area. Among those reported detained were former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, and All India Students’ Association member Neha Bora.

The protests stem from allegations that the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being used to remove duplicate and ineligible voters, a claim the commission denies, saying the exercise is aimed at cleaning the voter list.

Police in Delhi also imposed a lockdown around the capital, deploying large numbers of officers and paramilitary personnel to prevent further gatherings. The CJP alleges its founder Abhijeet Dipke and two other leaders were detained before they could leave an aircraft in the capital and were held at an undisclosed location without access to lawyers.
