Gwent police face surge in murders after teen killing in Blaina
Police say 11 killings in Gwent this year have pushed the rural county into an unprecedented homicide spike.

Fourteen‑year‑old Lilly Jones disappeared on a Saturday in June in the Welsh Valleys town of Blaina and was found two days later stabbed to death in Duffryn Park, a nine‑acre woodland area along the Ebbw Fach River, according to dailymail.co.uk.
A fellow 14‑year‑old boy has been charged with her murder. The case adds to a dramatic increase in killings across Gwent, a county north of Cardiff that normally records two or three murders a year. Police chiefs say 11 people have been killed in the first ten months of 2026, a rise they describe as "unprecedented" and a 270 percent increase over the previous year.
Gwent Police Chief Constable Mark Hobrough warned that the force’s 1,535 officers are at risk of burnout and that record overtime payments are straining the department’s finances. He said the surge could force the force to consider hiring specialist investigators on "zero‑hours type" contracts if the trend continues.
The victims this year span a wide age range. In February, 17‑year‑old rugby player Tristan Kerr was stabbed to death with a zombie knife in Abertridwr near Caerphilly. In May, 16‑year‑old Jaydon Bowyer and his 19‑year‑old friend Tashay Canoville were killed in Newport after being thrown from a motorbike in a suspected hit‑and‑run. The oldest victim, 74‑year‑old Brian Parfitt, died after an attack inside his home in Pontypool a month earlier. In August, 56‑year‑old Tony Jones was killed in a brawl in Pontnewynydd, which police believe involved rival motorcycle clubs Hells Angels and Vikings.
Police investigations have led to 45 arrests and the preservation of 55 crime scenes. Hobrough noted that many of the killings are linked to domestic violence, substance misuse or trivial disputes, and that there is no single motive connecting the incidents. He also mentioned a separate, unrelated incident in which a nine‑month‑old baby died in a dog attack.
