The University of Maine System’s Board of Trustees voted 9-5, with one abstention, on Monday to remove former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell’s name from a campus building and a scholarship fund, citing his connections to the late‑convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, nypost.com reported.
The Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions on UMaine’s flagship campus in Orono will be renamed, as will the George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship, which supports a year of postgraduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Mitchell, now 93, appears in more than 300 documents released by the Department of Justice related to the Epstein case. He has denied any personal wrongdoing or knowledge of Epstein’s sexual abuse.
University officials formed a task force in February to examine whether the naming should continue. The task force concluded that, while no wrongdoing by Mitchell was found, retaining his name could compromise public trust and harm the university’s reputation.
