Alonzo Lunsford, a former sergeant who survived the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting, said he intends to attend the execution of former Army Major Nidal Hasan, scheduled for Dec. 3, 2026 at Fort Hood, Texas. Lunsford, who was shot seven times by Hasan, told ABC News he wants to face the convicted gunman one last time.
Hasan, convicted of killing 13 soldiers and wounding 32, is set to be executed by firing squad – the first U.S. military execution by this method since World War II. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the execution will be livestreamed online for the public.
"I want him to be able to look at my eyes and to let him understand I won't be defeated, can't be defeated. I am no longer a victim, his victim. I am a survivor," Lunsford said, as reported by the Independent.
Lunsford welcomed President Donald Trump’s approval of the execution, saying it could bring closure for survivors. He added, "It's how he shot us," referring to Hasan’s method of killing.
However, Lunsford expressed discomfort with the Pentagon’s plan to make the execution available to anyone online. He argued the broadcast should be limited to survivors and families of the victims, warning against turning the event into a "pay‑per‑view" spectacle or a "basketball tournament." He also questioned the message a public livestream would send internationally, stating, "We're not trying to meet a standard – we're trying to set a standard for the free world."
Another survivor, Dayna Ferguson, said she was surprised by the livestream decision but noted that documenting death and warfare has historic precedent. She remarked, "It's not completely shocking, given that death and war have historically always been documented through photographs and video. But it's just not something I expected to happen."
