UAE investigators said a co‑pilot on Flydubai flight FZ1073 attacked the captain with an emergency axe during the Dubai‑Tel Aviv leg, aiming to seize the aircraft for a suicide strike on Ben Gurion Airport.

The suspect surprised the captain inside the cockpit, striking him and causing head injuries, according to a forensic medical report. The captain tried to call for help while a pilot on the return leg noticed unusual cockpit‑door movements, approached, entered with an access code and witnessed the assault.

With assistance from a cabin crew member and several passengers, the pilot restrained the attacker and rescued the injured captain. The return‑flight captain and co‑pilot regained control, diverted the jet and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

The suspect confessed to acting alone, and investigators continue to review evidence for possible accomplices.
