Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi performed their first dual kidney transplant on Tuesday, according to an ANI release reported by News18.
The kidneys came from a 62‑year‑old man declared brain‑dead on 19 September at Command Hospital, Chandimandir. Classified as a marginal donor, both kidneys were transplanted into one recipient to maximise clinical benefit amid a national organ shortage.
The multidisciplinary team was headed by Director and Professor of Urology and Renal Transplant, Dr. Pawan Vasudeva, with Dr. Niraj Kumar, Dr. Sandeep Kumar and Dr. Gaurav Vashisht assisting. Medical Superintendent Dr. Charu Bamba provided institutional support.
The Indian Air Force (Western Command) airlifted the organs to Delhi; the liver went to Army Hospital (Research & Referral) while the kidneys were delivered to Safdarjung Hospital.
Hospital Director Dr. Kavita Sharma said the success marks a milestone for the institution’s kidney‑transplant programme and demonstrates a strategic approach to using marginal donors.
