Police are investigating a break‑in of a FedEx truck parked outside Professional Sports Authenticator’s (PSA) headquarters in Santa Ana, California, on Oct. 13. The theft involved three pallets of recently graded trading cards, with two pallets alone valued at roughly $963,000, according to officials.
What happened
The FedEx truck was left unattended for up to 90 minutes, during which its locks were broken and the thieves removed two full pallets and disturbed a third, Santa Ana Police Department spokesperson Natalie Garcia said. Each of the two full pallets contained about 100 packages, while the third held roughly 50 packages, Mashable reported.
What the reports add
Mashable cited a New York Times and The Athletic report that PSA estimated the value of two pallets at around $963,000 and that the total value of all three pallets would exceed $1 million. The Athletic also noted that PSA was still assessing the value of the third pallet. Bleacher Report, referencing an AP news release, gave a single figure of $963,000 as the estimated value at the time of the incident and said the exact total had not yet been determined.
What was said
PSA told Mashable, “We are working closely with law enforcement and the carrier as the investigation continues. We have deactivated the certificates for the stolen items and notified marketplace partners so they can be on the lookout for rare and serialized items.”
Police spokesperson Natalie Garcia said, “The estimated value of the stolen cards at the time of the incident was $963,000. However, the exact value of the stolen items has not yet been determined.”
FedEx spokesperson David Westrick said, “The security of our customers' shipments is a top priority,” and referred further questions to police.
How it came about
PSA, a leading grader of sports and Pokémon cards, had recently completed a batch of cards that were being returned to owners when the truck was parked outside its Santa Ana facility. The incident follows earlier coverage by Felo News of FedEx’s logistics operations, including the company’s September 30 order for 2,000 Harbinger electric trucks (FedEx places $300 million order for 2,000 Harbinger electric trucks), highlighting the carrier’s expanding infrastructure in California.
