Egypt unveiled a restored version of the 2nd‑century “Tondo of the Two Brothers” on Sunday, announcing its loan to a temporary exhibition in Rome, officials said.
The painting, part of the Fayoum mummy portrait collection, was conserved over three weeks by specialists from Rome working with Egyptian Museum conservators in Tahrir. Restorers repaired termite‑damaged wood and fragile paint, recovering the right‑hand brother’s features.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy called the work an example of international cooperation, while museum director Aly Abdel Halim highlighted the delicate intervention required. The Rome show, organized by MondoMostre’s Tomaso Radaelli, will display more than 110 objects from the collection from November 2026 to May 2027.
