Amazon announced on Tuesday that it has signed a new agreement with the Television Academy, designating Prime Video as the exclusive global home of the Emmy Awards from 2027 through 2032. The streaming will be live and free in September, with no Prime subscription required, and will reach more than 240 countries and territories, according to the outlet Gizmodo.
Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy, said, "Television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the world can share," in the Amazon press release cited by Gizmodo.
The move ends a decades‑long tradition of the Emmys rotating among the four major U.S. broadcast networks—ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC—and marks the first time the ceremony will have a single dedicated home. The 2026 ceremony, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, drew about 6.7 million viewers, down nearly 10 % from the prior year, according to the Associated Press, but still well above the record low of 4.3 million viewers in January 2024.
