Winnipeg police say Daniel Edward Warren, 29, of Edmonton, has been charged with fraud and multiple sex crimes after allegedly scamming three seniors and assaulting a teenage girl in Winnipeg.
Investigators say the fraud involved more than $37,000 taken from three residents in their 80s between Aug. 17 and Aug. 22, when callers pretended to be grandchildren needing bail money. Victims handed over cash, gold and silver coins, and the suspect collected the money in person.
During the fraud investigation, police learned Warren had travelled to Winnipeg with a teenage girl and was staying at a short‑term rental. The girl told investigators she was sexually assaulted by Warren at the rental and could not return to Alberta on her own.
Warren was arrested and, on Aug. 23, charged with sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon and sexual interference, in addition to fraud over $5,000, two counts of fraud under $5,000, possession of methamphetamine and possession of fentanyl. He remains in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
