1‑Year‑Old Dutch Baby Euthanised Under New Assisted‑Dying Law

The child, born prematurely and suffering severe brain damage, was euthanised after doctors concluded her suffering was unbearable.

A 1‑year‑old baby was the first child to be euthanised in the Netherlands under the country’s 2024 law that permits assisted death for children aged 1 to 12. The Dutch government report, released on 28 September, details the child’s medical history and the decision process.

The baby was born abroad at 26 weeks and developed sepsis and severe cerebral palsy. At eight months she was diagnosed with infantile epileptic spasms syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy that caused severe sleeping disorders, coughing fits and a swallowing disorder. By 10 months her seizures had increased significantly when eating. The assessment committee concluded the child had extensive brain damage, a developmental age of about six weeks at almost two years old, and would likely require lifelong support for all activities of daily living.

Doctors judged the child’s suffering to be unbearable with no prospect of improvement and ruled that euthanasia was the only reasonable option. The physician followed the six‑point checklist required by the Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide Act and fully informed the parents. The report found the procedure was carried out lawfully.
