The Independent reports that the Draconids meteor shower, active from 6 to 10 October 2026, will reach its maximum on the evening of 9 October. Astronomers expect a modest display of five to ten meteors per hour, produced as Earth passes through debris from comet 21 P/Giacobini‑Zinner. The meteors travel at about 40,000 mph, making them relatively slow and faint, which means larger particles are needed for noticeable streaks. The Met Office forecasts significant cloud cover over southern UK, while northern regions should have clearer skies. The Royal Observatory Greenwich advises observers to avoid light pollution, turn off screens, and not use binoculars or telescopes, instead looking up to the widest possible sky area. The Draconids will be followed by the Orionids on 21‑22 October and the Taurids later in the month.
