Comedian Dewayne Perkins, known for “The Blackening” and “The Studio,” is releasing a six‑episode digital series titled “I Swear We’re Friends” on YouTube this fall, Variety reported.

What happened

The “skitcom” – described by its creators as a love letter to television – launches with the first two episodes on Oct. 14, episodes three and four on Oct. 21, and the final two on Oct. 28. Each episode is modeled after a different beloved series, including “Girlfriends,” “Succession,” “24,” “My Wife & Kids,” “Charmed” and “Touched By An Angel.” Perkins directed all six episodes and co‑wrote the series with James Rogers III, Mark Wright and others.

What the reports add

Variety notes that the cast features Devere Rogers, Brian Jordan Jr., Philemon Chambers and Cameron J. Ross, with guest appearances by Daryl Stephens, Steven G. Norfleet, Courtney Taylor, Tracie Thoms, Justen Ross and Jermelle Simon. Grammy‑winner Durand Bernarr performs the theme song, and Sade Ndya serves as director of photography. Post‑production is handled by Skapa Films.

What was said

The series’ press release, quoted by Variety, says it aims to fill a two‑decade void for Black gay male friendships on screen, offering “Black queer men the space to simply be funny, messy, complicated friends.”

How it came about

Perkins, who began in Chicago improv with 3Peat before breaking out in “The Blackening,” is also returning to Apple TV’s “The Studio” and working on “The Blackening 2” for Lionsgate. The new YouTube project follows his recent involvement in the horror‑thriller “Wrong Number.”
