DATA Network to move AI data protocol to Sui blockchain

The shift follows a rebrand and a surge in Trace registrations, with a transition plan to be published before the upgrade.

DATA Network, formerly Story, announced on Monday that it will retire its independent blockchain and migrate its AI training data protocol to the Sui ecosystem, supported by a $30 million investment from the Sui Foundation.

The project's Trace registry, launched in June, will join Sui, while Walrus, a decentralized storage platform on Sui, will become the default storage layer for applications run by the DATA Foundation and its partners.

A DATA Foundation spokesperson told Cointelegraph that maintaining a dedicated chain for a single use case required costly validator and security infrastructure, and that Sui already provides the needed storage and access‑control capabilities.

Trace has recorded more than 270 million registrations in about four months, prompting the decision. The existing chain will stay operational until the upgrade is complete, and a detailed timeline and holder transition plan will be released beforehand.
