Disney announced on Oct. 26 that its teen supernatural series “Coven Academy” has been renewed for a second season, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

What happened

The first season, created by Tim Federle, premiered on Freeform on Oct. 1, with the remaining episodes released the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. The season consists of 21 short “chapters.” Disney reported that the season accumulated 20.3 million hours watched globally in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu. Nielsen data showed the series was the most‑watched streaming title among viewers aged 12‑17 during its premiere weekend and placed in the top five overall when measured by total views.

What the reports add

Variety noted that the first chapter was also posted on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, where it earned more than 30 million views. The outlet added that half of teen viewers (age 12‑17) co‑viewed the series, and close to two‑thirds of all viewers did so as well. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Federle will continue as executive producer for season 2 and listed the main cast, including Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar and Malachi Barton as Jake, among others.

What was said

Variety quoted Disney’s internal data, stating the series “hit 20.3 million hours watched globally in its first three weeks of availability on Disney+ and Hulu.” The Hollywood Reporter reported that Disney’s announcement highlighted the show’s strong performance with teen audiences, though no direct quote from a Disney spokesperson was provided.

How it came about

“Coven Academy” was originally slated to be Disney Channel’s first young‑adult series before being shifted to Freeform and the streaming platforms. The rapid renewal mirrors other early‑season renewals covered by Felo News, such as the Oct. 2 renewal of Netflix’s “A Different World” after just four days of viewership, and the Oct. 12 renewal of PBS’s “Civics Made Easy.” These examples illustrate a broader industry trend of networks committing to series that quickly demonstrate strong audience engagement.
