Ahmad Khalil Elshazly, 29, of West Haven, Connecticut, was sentenced on Monday to 92 months in federal prison for conspiring to support the Islamic State, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Elshazly had been arrested on Dec. 15, 2019, after paying $500 to an undercover agent he believed was linked to ISIS and planning to be smuggled to Turkey and then Syria. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 30, 2022, to the charge.

U.S. Attorney David X. Sullivan said, "There is no higher priority than the security of our nation and its citizens," and noted that Elshazly will be under supervised release for the rest of his life after completing his sentence.

During his detention, officials found a handwritten plan for an uprising at the prison facility in August 2025. Elshazly’s attorneys described his background, citing a chaotic upbringing, autism spectrum disorder and depression as factors that made him vulnerable to extremist propaganda.
