Washington – A Tennessee prison attempted to execute 50‑year‑old Christa Pike on Oct. 1, 2026, using two doses of pentobarbital, but the lethal‑injection failed, leaving her unconscious on a ventilator for several days before she woke and began speaking, her lawyer Randy Spivey told reporters, Gulf News reported.

Pike, sentenced to death for a 1990 murder committed as a teenager, was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center after the botched attempt. She remains shackled to a hospital bed, able to speak only minimally, unable to swallow, and with both arms swollen and immobile, according to Spivey. An anesthesiologist retained by her lawyers said she was off the ventilator and has no memory of the execution attempt, though she recognizes her name and believes the month is September.

Medical staff have asked for the shackles to be removed, but a court hearing denied the request, as reported by Gulf News. The court also ordered Tennessee corrections officials to preserve all evidence – medical supplies, waste, audio and video recordings – related to the failed execution.

Governor Bill Lee described the incident as "deeply disturbing" and suspended all Tennessee executions pending an independent review. The state’s prison chief resigned in the wake of the controversy. Later that week, Texas carried out an execution of 46‑year‑old Jamaal Howard by lethal injection, the first in the United States since Pike’s failed attempt.

The Death Penalty Information Centre noted Pike is the first inmate to survive after receiving lethal doses of execution drugs.
