Former India leg‑spinner Yuzvendra Chahal told Aakash Chopra’s Baith & Bol podcast that former captain MS Dhoni’s guidance from behind the stumps made half of his and Kuldeep Yadav’s work easier, contributing to the success of their ‘KulCha’ partnership in limited‑overs cricket.
What happened
During India’s recent limited‑overs matches, Chahal said Dhoni would watch the pitch and batters from his wicket‑keeping position and advise the spinners on line, length and when to attack the stumps. He claimed the advice reduced the need for the bowlers to make “unnecessary alterations” and helped them stick to a clear plan.
What the reports add
India.com reported that Chahal described Dhoni’s input as “50% mera or Kuldeep ka kaam asaan hi hojaata tha,” meaning the duo’s workload was halved because of Dhoni’s experience. The article also noted that Dhoni’s observations were not limited to field placements; he communicated pitch behaviour and batter movements in real time.
What was said
Chahal said on the podcast: “50% mera or Kuldeep ka kaam asaan hi hojaata tha, kyunki ek toh wo piche se dekh rahe ki wicket kaisa chl rha hai with experience, piche se bol rahe ki stump pe hi rakhna zyada krne ki zarurat nahi hai, waise hi out ho jaate the batters.” The quote is attributed to Chahal on the Baith & Bol episode, which is streamed on YouTube, Facebook and Spotify.
How it came about
Dhoni’s role as a senior player and wicket‑keeper gave him a unique view of the game, allowing him to mentor younger bowlers. Chahal recalled that Dhoni’s guidance was especially valuable during India’s 2018 tour of South Africa, when the leg‑spinner delivered notable performances. Although Chahal and Kuldeep have not played together regularly in recent years, their partnership remains a memorable phase of India’s white‑ball cricket.
