Michael Carrick stays on as Manchester United manager after crisis talks

Carrick survived hierarchy meetings and fan anger, with potential replacements named but the club confirmed he will lead the team into the Chelsea match.

Manchester United confirmed on Monday that Michael Carrick will remain as manager after a series of crisis talks following the club's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday. The club's technical director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada met at Carrington to discuss Carrick's future and to sound out possible replacements, but Carrick arrived shortly before 2 pm, watched the under‑21s match against Hull and left a few hours later.

Despite the loss, which extended United's winless run to eight games and left them 16th in the Premier League and bottom of their Champions League group, Carrick is set to prepare the first‑team for the upcoming weekend trip to Chelsea. The squad will reconvene at Carrington on Tuesday for training, which is expected to be led by Carrick.

The hierarchy reportedly considered former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and ex‑Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann as frontrunners if a change becomes necessary, while Aston Villa’s Unai Emery and Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler were also mentioned but would demand significant compensation.

Fans directed their anger at the Glazers, co‑owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Ineos board, chanting against them and the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, after the Bournemouth defeat. Carrick’s decision to bench captain Bruno Fernandes – who had publicly criticised the manager’s tactics – appeared to receive tacit support from supporters, who did not chant for Fernandes during the match.

Former United defender Gary Neville praised Carrick on Sky Sports, calling him “a brilliant man” of integrity and professionalism, and suggested that the captain’s public criticism hinted at deeper dressing‑room issues.
