Carrefour chief Alexandre Bompard said on X that rioters targeted 50 of the chain's stores and about 1,500 other shops across France on Saturday, causing damage worth more than €10 million.

What happened

Violent protests that began as peaceful demonstrations against the cost of living turned into looting in dozens of cities on October 17. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that 600 police officers were injured and more than 2,000 people were arrested.

What was said

Bompard condemned the attacks, writing, "Nothing can justify such violence" and urging the Republic to protect shopkeepers. He added that the repair costs require an accelerated compensation process similar to natural‑disaster aid.

How it came about

The unrest follows weeks of student protests over school conditions, which Felo previously covered in student riots on October 6 and the broader October riots on October 17.
