Carat unveils “Difference Engineered” positioning to boost client advantage
The new global brand identity aims to counter a growing ‘difference deficit’ in media by blending data, technology and creativity.

Carat, the global media agency of Dentsu, announced on 15 Oct 2026 that it is rolling out a new worldwide positioning called “Difference Engineered.” The brand identity is presented as a framework for delivering measurable competitive advantage to clients by deliberately engineering differentiation into media strategy.
The launch follows a period of strong performance for Carat, including being named 2026 Media Network of the Year at Cannes Lions and receiving a series of regional awards. In South Africa, the agency was honoured as Media Agency of the Year at the 2025 Financial Mail AdFocus Awards and recognised as Media Agency of the Decade by Scopen in 2026.
According to the agency, the media landscape is facing a “difference deficit” – a widening gap between the efficiency of automated media systems and their ability to create distinctive, memorable brand experiences. Carat says the new positioning will address this by identifying moments where differentiation can generate advantage and then combining data, technology, creativity, marketplace intelligence and human judgement to embed that difference throughout planning, activation and measurement.
Lerina Bierman, managing director of Carat South Africa, explained that Difference Engineered “puts into words the way we believe great media should work” and that in a world where automation can make brands look alike, the agency’s role is to find opportunities to do things differently and turn those into meaningful advantage for clients. She added that the agency’s recent recognitions give confidence to continue pushing forward, noting that “difference doesn’t happen by chance; it comes from bringing together our people, data, technology, creativity, strategy and media expertise with real intent, and engineering that difference into better outcomes for our clients and their businesses.”
The proposition builds on Carat’s heritage as the world’s first media agency and its long‑standing focus on attention, quality media and consumer experience. By making difference a deliberate part of media strategy, Carat aims to keep media systems responsive to changing audiences while delivering measurable results for brands.
