A vehicle entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland at about 1.30pm, triggering a large emergency response. Police, fire, ambulance and coastguard teams were on scene, with rescue boats and a helicopter deployed to search the water. The incident was first reported by a neighbour who called 999 after seeing the car breach a barrier and plunge into the river. The Northumbria Police, North East Ambulance Service and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service all confirmed that emergency crews were at the scene and urged the public to stay away from the area.
