Mary "Meeka" Wear, an 86‑year‑old mother of seven, was fatally struck on Waalew Road in Apple Valley, California, Friday night while attempting to rescue her dog Benji, which had just been hit by another vehicle, the New York Post reported.

Wear was hit at around 8:15 p.m. by a 70‑year‑old driver who ran her over as she ran into traffic. The driver remained at the scene and, according to KTLA 5, drugs and alcohol were not factors in the incident.

A GoFundMe page created in Wear’s memory describes her as a beloved mother, grandmother and great‑grandmother, noting that she had recently helped her daughter and granddaughter launch the Buc N Doe restaurant in Fawnskin. The fundraiser, which seeks to fund a memorial and support her two deceased sons, has raised over $1,000 of its $1,500 goal.

Wear had previously asked that her ashes be spread at the Buc N Doe restaurant after her cremation. The page also mentions that she had already arranged her own cremation prior to the accident.
