Glacial lake outburst in Bhutan triggers flood alerts in Assam and West Bengal

Authorities in India have issued alerts for six districts as water from Bhutan's Shintaphu Tsho lake surges downstream.

According to TimesNowNews, a major glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) from Shintaphu Tsho in Bhutan’s high‑altitude Himalayas prompted high alerts in Assam and West Bengal on Oct. 30, 2026.

Disaster‑management teams have been deployed along vulnerable riverbanks, and district administrations have urged residents near rivers to avoid riverbeds and prepare for possible evacuations. Flood warnings were issued for Assam’s Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang and Dhubri districts, and West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts.

The surge entered river systems that flow into the Brahmaputra valley and the northern Duars region, raising concerns about flash floods, bank erosion, and damage to agricultural land and settlements.

State disaster response forces have set up round‑the‑clock control rooms to monitor river discharge, while officials continue to track water levels for any rapid rise.
