Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) has received a ₹75‑crore grant from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), under the Department of Biotechnology’s BioE3 programme, to set up a 100‑tonne‑per‑annum research and development facility for polylactic acid (PLA) co‑polymers.

The pilot‑scale centre will be located at BCML’s integrated manufacturing complex in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh, and is intended to produce techno‑economic data, process know‑how and skilled manpower needed for commercial‑scale manufacturing of specialised PLA grades and advanced co‑polymers.

According to BCML, the facility will also enable collaboration with research institutions, support product development, customer validation and scaling‑up activities, and bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial production.
