Severe turbulence struck Avianca Flight 42 en route from Medellín, Colombia, to New York, causing the Airbus A320 to drop about 25,000 feet and divert to Miami International Airport, where it landed around 3:30 a.m. local time on Friday, Gulf News reported.

Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue said eight people were injured, including one taken to a trauma centre; airline officials told CBS News Miami that nine people were injured – three crew members and six passengers. FlightRadar24 data showed the aircraft had climbed to roughly 35,000 feet over the Caribbean before the sudden descent.

Passengers observed several ambulances waiting on the tarmac, and video showed some with ice packs on their heads. Avianca’s airport team began arranging onward travel, scheduling a replacement flight to JFK at 8:25 a.m. the same day.
